Advantages And Disadvantages of Pet Tracking Collars

Posted by admin | Pets Collar | Monday 29 March 2010 5:48 pm

To choose Pet GPS collar or Pet Tracking collar? I will recommend pet tracking collar. Why?

The first reason because it was a budget item and must-have devices if you want to quickly locate your lost pet. This kind of tracking collar transmits a periodic beacon signal that is detected by a directional receiver. With the receiver you are able to tell in which direction your pet is located by how strong a signal you are detecting. In addition, as you get closer to the radio collar the beacon signal also gets stronger so you can determine both the relative direction and distance to your pet. In addition, with a pet tracking collar, you can find your missing pet in just a few minutes versus finding them in hours, days, or even weeks.

A built in short range radio tracking has two distinct advantages over GPS collars because they use free radio frequencies as you avoid the monthly cellular network fees used by the GPS system.

Furthermore, the electronics used with these short range devices can be made small and light enough for any domestic pet to wear. The tracking system on the collar only has to beacon a weak signal so the amount of electronics and power requirements are low. These types of tracking collars just need a small coin battery for power.

However, there is one disadvantage to using a radio tracking collar. Unlike the pet GPS locators you would not be able to pinpoint the longitude and latitude of your pet  since the radio collar does not transmit any exact location coordinates — just distance and directional information that you can detect via the relative signal strength with the directional receiver.

The other perceived disadvantage of a short range radio pet locator collar is that it will not work over long distances as compared to the GPS collar. That is only partially true.

A short range radio collar would be able to work in much more remote areas and in places where the cellular phone networks cannot reach since the radio collar only needs to transmit as far as the receiver while the GPS pet collar needs to transmit to the nearest cellular tower.

So consider a radio pet collar as a pet tracking device if you cannot find a pet GPS collar that fits your needs and budget.

Make a Pet Collar by Yourself

Want to save money by making a collar for your pet? It’s probably easier and cheaper than you think. If you are creative, you can create different collars for each week. It’s simple by following the steps here.

Before this, prepare all the things needed:-

  • Approximately 3 feet of 1 inch nylon webbing (less for smaller pets)
  • 1-inch D-ring
  • 1-inch tri-glide slider
  • 1-inch side release nylon buckle
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors

Follow the steps, and you will reach the target

  1. Cut a length of 1 inch nylon webbing to approximately 3 feet long. This length may need to be cut down, depending on the type and size of your pet.
  2. Weave one end of the webbing through the D-ring and the receptacle part of the buckle. Fold the end about 1 1/2 inches past the buckle, and sew securely.
  3. Thread the remaining end of the webbing into the slider and the remaining end of the buckle. Fold the end under about 1 1/2 inches past the slider, and sew it securely.
  4. Try it on your pet and adjust for fit. The collar should be snug, but not constrictive. You should be able to fit a couple of fingers between your pet’s neck and the collar.
  5. Personalize the collar. Embroider a design or your pet’s name. It’s up to you.

Done! :)

Dog Shock Collars

Posted by admin | Dog,Pets Collar | Sunday 28 March 2010 9:12 am

Dog shock collars, also called bark collars, are an instrument used in the training of dogs. A dog shock collar is an electric collar that has the ability to shock a dog when his behaviour is inappropriate. Dog owners struggling with a dog that barks endlessly may find relief from the barking by using a shock collar. While they remain a controversial animal training method among professionals, many dog owners employ training shock collars when other methods fail.

If you are really interested with its features which is waterproof or water resistant, have a non-physical correction option such as a tone or vibration, and employ varying intensity levels, you can purchase a dog shock collar from your local pet store or online pet supply retailer.

Since it’s still new for some people, it may give pros and cons. For advantages, dog shock collars work effectively to help train dogs and rid them of negative behaviours while on the other hand, using a dog shock collar can make your dog fearful and even trigger severe aggression toward humans. The collars can also cause your dog to have stress or anxiety issues.

Therefore as the alternative for the first user, apply a reward-based training method, such as dog treats. You can also enroll your dog in a class or pay to have a professional train your dog.
